Queerie is an organisation designed to educate and promote courtesy towards the LGBTQIA+ community. Queerie’s pocket sized book has been designed and developed to educate high school students on how to show courtesy towards the LGBTQIA+ community. In high school, students are still developing their moral compass, opinions and ideas of the world. It is pivotal we encourage a future which is fair, equal and one which celebrates difference.
High school students often say words without realising the impact they may be having on others, and so, the aim of this book is to teach courtesy and educate stu-dents by showing examples of everyday language (they may already be using with their peers) that they may not realise is inappropriate.
The book guides students through three main sections: gender pronouns, words that hurt and why, and what to say and what not to say. To engage students, comics, text messages, illustration, inclusive language, rhetorical questions and interactive elements have been included in the design to further assist students with learning.
The book will be distributed in classes on the 17th of May, the international day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. Posters will also be hung around the school in anticipation to spread awareness for the upcoming day.
